Tony Haynes, composer/creative director of the Grand Union Orchestra, tells the inside story of his music for the orchestra, its musicians and colourful history.

This great venture by the Grand Union Orchestra is now in its third year, offering young musicians aged 12-21 the opportunity to:
• Work alongside leading professional musicians
• Learn about world music, first hand, from experts
• Discover new instruments and develop improvisation skills
• Meet and create with like-minded young musicians
• Take part in the final concert featuring music created in the workshops
Under the general direction of Tony Haynes, Grand Union’s founder composer/director, sessions are led by musicians who have worked together as Grand Union’s core team for many years, including:
Shanti Jayasinha (Sri Lanka/Scotland) – trumpet, cello, Course Director
Claude Deppa (South Africa) – trumpet, African drums
Louise Elliott (Australia) – tenor saxophone, flute
Yousuf Ali Khan (Bangladesh) – tabla, dholak
Carlos Fuentes (Chile) – Latin-American percussion
Lilia Iontcheva (Bulgaria) – tuned percussion, congas
Ruijun Hu (China) – dizi, xiao (Chinese flutes)
